One of the revenue sources for states is road taxes. According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), they are daily levies paid by commercial transporters operating within the state.
In 2020, the 36 states generated a total of N28.39 billion from road taxes. This represents 2.17% of all Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of the 36 states and FCT.
Lagos state generated the highest revenue from road tax in 2020, followed by Zamfara.
Unsurprisingly, Lagos leads in revenue generated from road tax. In some instances, its road tax revenue is higher than the total IGR of some states.
