After the ban of rice importation in 2015, the total value of rice produced increased from 4.0 million metric tonnes in 2014 to 5.6 million metric tonnes in 2019. In 2020, the value of production dropped to 5.4 million metric tonnes.
The importation of rice has also gradually decreased since 2015. In 2014, rice importation value was 1.6 trillion metric tonnes and by 2015 the value reduced to 83 million metric tonnes and by 2020 the importation value has reduced to 62 million metric tonnes.
According to the FAO, Nigeria had its highest rice export value with 4000 metric tonnes in 2018.
Rice, one of the most consumed staples after maize and wheat, has an annual national consumption value of over 7 million metric tonnes.
