Urban population has experienced rapid growth since 2010 according to World Bank data.

Urban population refers to people living in urban areas defined by national geographical standards. The most recent data from 2020 shows that 107 million of Nigeria’s total population currently live in urban areas, which makes up 51.96% of the total population. 

The main causes of urbanisation in Nigeria include rural-urban transformation, population increase, expansion of neighbourhoods, and rapid commercialization in urban areas. Other factors include industrialization in urban areas, social benefits, and employment opportunities.

Research has also shown social services available in urban areas compared to rural areas attract movements from rural areas to urban areas. Some of these services include better healthcare,  better education, good roads. Urbanisation has also caused a number of issues like overpopulation, congestion leading to pollution, poverty, lack of employment opportunities, inadequate infrastructure, and squatter settlements.
