Nigeria has the highest annual egg production and the second-largest chicken population in Africa, according to the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO). The southern region of Nigeria contributes 57 per cent of total local production, making it the region that contributes the most to Nigerian poultry production.
The Nigerian poultry industry comprises approximately 180 million birds and produces 300 million tons of meat and 650 million tons of eggs per year. Yet, local production only meets 30% of the demand for chicken eggs and meat, so there is plenty of room for growth in the industry. As you consume your locally bought Christmas chicken today, you’re not only celebrating the season but you’re also being patriotic, contributing to Nigeria’s poultry industry that is worth about N1.6trn.
