Nigeria recorded a slight decline in its gas production in 2020. This was revealed in the latest report from the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI).
According to the report, the total gas production dropped from 3,047,507 Million Standard Cubic Feet (mmscf) in 2019 to 3,013,640 mmscf in 2020, representing a 33,867 mmscf (1.11%) decrease.
Dataphyte’s review of the gas production data revealed that the 2020 production was the second-lowest the country has recorded between 2016-2020.
In the period under review, the largest gas production was in 2017, with a production volume of 4,499,695 mmscf. The following year experienced a sharp decrease, production dipped by 54.67% in 2018 but picked up in 2019 before declining again in 2020.
A month-by-month analysis of the gas production volume in 2020 showed that the highest production happened in January with a production volume of 274,086 mmscf. That is an average production of 8,841 mmscf per day.
While the lowest production occurred in December. Only 229,842 mmscf was produced which was an average of 7,414 mmscf per day.
Except in April, July, and November, production declined all through from January to December.
Per contributors to the total 3,013,640 mmscf of gas produced in 2020, Joint Venture (JV) contributed the largest share (68.4%). This was followed by Production Sharing Contract (PSC) with 18.7%, then Sole Risk (SC) with 10.5%.
Marginal Field (MF) was the least contributor. It accounted for only 2.4% of total gas production for the year, while Service Contract (SC) contributed zero.
