The Leading Insecurity Trend in the Federal Capital in July 2022 was Armed Robbery

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) experienced a total of 51 cases of insecurity in the month of July across the 6 Area councils. These cases of insecurity include kidnapping, robbery and civil disorder. 

There has been a heightened sense of insecurity in Abuja and especially so since the prison break of 6th July. In a report published by USAID on insecurity in Abuja for July, 51 incidents of insecurity occurred in the country’s seat of power. According to the report, the 51 incidents happened in 12 locations across the 6 Area Councils in the FCT. 

Of the 51 cases, 25 were cases of robbery, 18 were incidents of kidnapping, while 8 were civil disorder.

The USAID report states that each location recorded at least one incident of robbery, kidnapping and civil disorder. In the Bwari, all three incidents of kidnapping, robbery and civil disorder were recorded, while Matiama had the lowest cases in kidnapping, robbery, and civil disorder.

In incidents of robbery, all 12 locations have at least one case of robbery. Places like Asokoro, Abaji, Gwagwalada, Kuje, Lugbe and Kwali have zero record of civil disorder, while areas in Asokoro, Central Business District and Gudu have zero cases of kidnapping recorded.

The chart above shows that Abuja Municipal Area council had the highest cases and incidences of insecurity.

The analysis shows that AMAC recorded the highest incidence of insecurity with a record of 55.6% of insecurity occurrence, Bwari and Kuje recordorded 11.1%  11.1% of insecurity occurrences. Kwali Area Council, Gwagwalada Area Council and Abaji Area Council each accounted for 7.4% of the insecurity incidents recorded.
