Nigeria currently has over 197 million telecommunication subscribers across all mobile networks. The Nigeria Communication Commission held that the number of active telephone connections per 100 inhabitants in an area grew by 103.4% in January 2022.
On April 4th, 2022, about 72.77 million telecommunication subscribers were barred from making calls according to a directive from the federal government. This directive was issued in accordance with the NIN-SIM linkage policy which was first presented in December 2020 and has had multiple extensions over the past months. The NIN-SIM linkage has been touted as one way to help authorities fight banditry and terrorism in Nigeria.
Over 125 million telephone subscribers have now submitted their NIN to their various network providers.
